The International Defensive Pistol Association was started to give shooters an environment in which to compete with standard carry equipment. IDPA emphasizes more real world scenarios where a participant must wear concealment clothing and utilize cover while shooting. Competition only gear is outlawed in IDPA, and average shooters can be competitive with off the shelf guns and ammunition.

IDPA gives shooters a safe and competitive environment in which to compete against like minded individuals with carry oriented equipment. Most IDPA matches require 50-90 rounds of ammunition, an IDPA legal handgun, holster, and magazine pouches.
